Self Storage Law

The governors of Missouri and Pennsylvania have recently enacted significant updates to self-storage legislation in their respective states. These changes, related to tenant insurance and advertising for lien sales, were highlighted in a July 15 email newsletter from the national Self Storage Association (SSA).

In Missouri, Governor Mike Parsons approved a bill that raises the maximum coverage of self-storage tenant insurance from $5,000 to $15,000. This new legislation will take effect on August 28.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1818 (HB 1818), which revises the advertising requirements for self-storage lien sales. Previously, facility operators were required to advertise twice in a print newspaper. The new law, effective August 27, allows operators to advertise once in a print newspaper and once online. Additionally, it provides a remedy for instances when the newspaper fails to publish the announcement on time, designating the online post as the most accurate in regard to the sale date.

These legislative updates reflect the ongoing efforts to modernize self-storage regulations and enhance operational efficiencies within the industry.
